Nu het aantal niet-aangeslotenen en religieus onverschilligen toeneemt, voegt dit boek een tot nu toe afwezige historische dimensie toe aan het veld van seculiere studies. Het toont een verscheidenheid aan manieren waarop de niet-religieuzen in het algemeen – of het nu organisaties, netwerken of zelfs toegewijde individuen zijn – invloed hebben op de interface tussen de staat en de religieuzen of de niet-religieuzen. Tot welke specifieke juridische statussen hebben deze processen geleid? Welke elementen werden in overweging genomen bij het nemen van deze beslissingen? Wie koos voor een erkenning van een niet-confessionele levenshouding en waarom? En omgekeerd, wie koos voor een scheidingsmuur en waarom? Zijn de zaken zo duidelijk? Biedt de verscheidenheid aan keuzes en kaders niet een gevarieerder spectrum? Welke continuïteiten en discontinuïteiten zijn er te zien in de geschiedenis van seculieren en hun organisaties? Deze patronen, uiteenlopend en verstrengeld, worden ontwikkeld en verklaard binnen het bredere concept van ‘meervoudige secularismen’.
